More Oxygen Facts

Here are some more amazing facts about fabulous oxygen:

1/ Our number of breaths per minute reduces by 66% from birth to adult;

  • birth to 6 weeks:             30–60 breaths per minute
  • 6 months:                         25–40 breaths per minute
  • 3 years:                 20–30 breaths per minute
  • 6 years:                 18–25 breaths per minute
  • 10 years:              15–20 breaths per minute
  • adults:                   12–20 breaths per minute

2/ The World Record for holding your breath is held by Stig Severinsen of Denmark. He broke the record achieving 22 minutes and 0 seconds at the London School of Diving, UK, on 3rd May 2012. Stig was allowed to hyperventilate with oxygen (Sadly, this was not with booost!) prior to the attempt, and did this for 19 minutes and 30 seconds.

3/ Oxygen was found in space. The Herschel telescope spotted molecules of oxygen in a star forming in the constellation of Orion in August 2011.

4/ In an emergency the yellow masks of a plane ‘drop down’ and when you tug at them the oxygen starts and will last for 15 minutes. The pilot has this time to get the plane to a breathable atmosphere.

5/ Oxygen.co.uk is owned by a London Estate Agent called, ‘Oxygen Property Management’. Strange but true.

6/ Mongolia has the worst air quality of any country and Estonia has the best air quality of any country.

7/ Oxygen is a popular name in music; ‘Oxygen’ is Rock band from Sweden that excel in high quality Melodic Rock with an 80's tinge or ‘The Oxygen Thieves’ are an alternative/indie rock band based in Cape Town or ‘Oxygen’ is a 4 piece Rock band from New York.

8/ The brain represents only 2% of the human body weight, it receives 15% of the cardiac output, but only 20% of total body oxygen consumption.

9/ BOC was formed in 1886 as ‘Brin’s Oxygen Company’ by two French brothers, Arthur and Leon Brin. In 1906 the brothers renamed the company ‘British Oxygen Company’ or ‘BOC’. In 2006 BOC became part of the Linde Group and is now the global leader in providing gases and chemicals.

10/ Ambulances carry pure oxygen because it is considered a first line treatment for many emergency situations.
